Donald Trump has a big mouth – so big that much of the Republican Party establishment is asking him to tone it down. His Twitter account is replete with examples of his boisterous opinions as well, and this mistakes sense. However, even he finally went too far, with this retweet:
Trump deleted that tweet but the implication is obvious: Trump was saying that Jeb Bush loves illegal immigrants because his wife is Mexican.
Trump managed to take himself completely off message (or perhaps on message – he’s now leading the Republican race according to one poll) at his campaign announcement, when he called Mexicans rapists and drug runners. He has since – repeatedly – doubled down on those remarks, which is now costing him a lot of business, as multiple organizations sever their ties with Trump.
Jeb Bush, understandably, took exception to the retweet:
“You can love the Mexican culture, you can love your Mexican-American wife and also believe that we need to control the border. This is bizarre kind of idea that somehow you can have an affection for people in a different country and not think the rule of law should apply. This is ludicrous.”
For a man as outspoken as Trump, you know that a tweet really had to be bad for him to decided that it went too far. That being said, something to keep in mind, since you can put very little past Trump: this might have been a dog-whistle. Perhaps Trump tweeted – and deleted – that tweet on purpose, in an effort to capture the votes of a less savory portion of the Republican Party.
