Red state Democrats are in a constant battle to distance themselves from the national party and show their pro-gun credentials. One such candidate is Alison Lundergan Grimes, the likely Democratic candidate for Senate in Kentucky, who describes herself as a pro-second amendment NRA member.
In a tweet two months ago, Grimes invited Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), her likely opponnent (assuming McConnell survives a primary challenge) to shoot with her, complete with a picture that showed grimes aiming a gun:
The response you see comes from Brad Dayspring, a strategist for the National Republican Senate Committee. The “eyes and ears” line is a reference to Grimes not wearing goggles or hearing protectors, something noted by others as well.
Fast forward a month and a half. Dayspring sends out this tweet:
What is Dayspring not wearing? You got it: eye or ear protection.
In an interview, Dayspring said he had earplugs in but admitted he should have had goggles in. He also did a very nice job of spinning his error back on Grimes: “I am wearing ear protection, and both Alison Lundergan Grimes and I should have been wearing eyes. Everyone should wear protection when shooting, especially elected officials and public figures who serve as examples for the greater public. Hopefully Alison Lundergan Grimes can admit and acknowledge the same.”
This isn’t the first time that the NRSC has had trouble with Grimes. In November, the NRSC sent out a tweet that called Grimes the new “Obama Girl.” The tweet also contained a link to an article that had this badly photoshopped picture, featuring Grimes’ face:
Maybe they want to not talk about Grimes for a while……….
