Facebook just released their top Facebook trends of the year. Check out the topics most discussed by American users:
Most Talked About Topics in the U.S.
1. Super Bowl
2. Government Shutdown
3. Boston Marathon
4. Syria Crisis
5. Harlem Shake
6. Pope Francis
7. George Zimmerman
8. Royal Baby
9. Nelson Mandela
10. Presidential Inauguration
Why are numbers 2, 4 and 10 italicized? Well, they are political topics. The government shutdown, Syria Crisis and Presidential Inauguration are all obviously related to government and politics, and you could probably make the argument that George Zimmerman was a political topic as well. In other words, at least 30% of the top ten Facebook trends of the year, in America, had to do with politics.
Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t break down trending topic by locality the same way that Twitter does, so it’s more difficult to say if state, or even local issues, broke into the world of “trending topics.”
However, on a national level, it is clear that politics is part of the Social Media conversation. If this doesn’t show that Facebook is a place for politics, I’m not quite sure will.
