Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District is currently occupied by freshman Ron Barber (D).  At the moment, four Republicans are running to defeat Barber.  One of those Republican’s is Jim Brown, a businessman.  Last week, Mr. Brown got himself into trouble with a Facebook post.

Last Monday, Mr. Brown wrote a Facebook post in which he compared slavery to entitlements:

The kicker of this, as far as I am concerned: “It is my sincere belief that over entitlements are a means of [enslaving] the people by robbing opportunity while taking care of basic needs.”

The astoundingly bad comparison was deleted shortly after being posted, and Brown has since clarified what he was trying to say on his Facebook page:

As far as apologies go, this one isn’t bad – he takes responsibility for his actions, acknowledges that what he said was poorly worded, repudiates any mistaken notion that slavery wasn’t too bad and says he’d do it over if he could.

Naturally, the original Facebook post went viral, hitting outlets like Buzzfeed, Huffington Post and Think Progress.

A word to the wise: careful with your hyperbole when using social media, or absurd comparisons like this will happen.
